ABSTRACT
In the centre of Belgrade (capital of Republic of Serbia) is a quarter known as Skadarlija. It is protected by law and buildings date from late
19th century. At the beginning of 20th century this quarter became popular place where artists of all kinds dedicated to Creation spent their
days and (particularly) nights. Eventually, the quarter gained bohemian reputation. Additionally, it must be said that taverns (that make most
of Skadarlija quarter) were in general the places for different social actions and interactions: places where social life was on-going
influencing economic, political, social, artistic and cultural development, places where one could freely express him/herself either verbally or
throughout the song. Nowadays, Skadarlija is among Belgrade's attractions where spirit of the old city is lively presented. The paper
deals with efforts aimed to preserve rebellious bohemian spirit that ended as preservation of urban landscape. The story aims to show that
making urban as new kind of heritage involves much more than mere protection. And the story about Skadarlija is an example showing that
if not appropriately approached heritage might be silent despite all radiating noise.
