ABSTRACT
The thousand-year development of Thang Long Hanoi capital has created an urban architectural heritage treasure covering four main
components : 1. The Hanoi ancient citadel still remains with several standing monuments such as foundation of Kinh Thien palace,
Doan Mon gate, Southern gate, Flag Tower, etc. 2. The Old Quarter or « 36 ancient streets » - reveals the memories of Hanoi
traditional handicraft proffesions, such as : streets of Hang Bac (street of goldsmiths), Hang Giay (street of paper producers), Thuoc Bac
(street of medicine proccesing),... 3. European quarter (Gothic style) characterized by planned boulevards with huge public
architectures on sides, like theatre, tribunal, museum, schoolhouse... 4. Religious works including pagodas, temples, churches, etc
integrated to sightseeing spots. Additionally, after Ha Tay province was annexed to Hanoi, the amount of historical monuments and
traditional villages has been consirably increased. It is essential to comprehensively acknowledge the values of the above mentioned
heritages, which will bring about the harmonization of planning for urban development and planning for preservation of historical and
cultural values in future.
