Forum UNESCO-University and
Heritage (FUUH) is a UNESCO project for undertaking activities to protect
and safeguard the cultural and natural heritage, through an informal network
of higher education institutions. FUUH is under the joint responsibility
of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Polytechnic University of Valencia
(UPV) Spain. This internet website is not an official UNESCO site but a
website created and managed by the UPV within the framework of the project
FUUH.
UNESCO today received a petition of signed by 125,000
people around the world protesting against the re-opening of a paper
and pulp mill on the shores of Lake Baikal, a World Heritage site
in the Russian Federation.
The petition was presented to UNESCO Assistant Director-General
for Culture, Francesco Bandarin, by Greenpeace and the World Wide
Fund for Nature (WWF), who agreed to bring it to the attention of
the World Heritage Committee, when it meets in Brasilia from 25
July to 3 August.
