12 February
- Submission to the National Cultural Policy consultation
Blue Shield Australia has made a submission to the Minister
for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts Peter Garrett’s
consultation to develop a National Cultural Policy. Blue Shield
Australia’s submission emphasises that a new National Cultural
Policy for Australia should:
- acknowledge the importance of preserving cultural heritage,
and the vital role that tangible and intangible cultural heritage
plays in Australia and abroad; and
- outline broad principles asserting the importance of appropriately
protecting and recovering cultural heritage in times of emergency
and disaster.
The submission advises that these principles should guide emergency
preparedness and response in Australia, and should inform the
training and procedures of military and civilian Australians internationally,
in humanitarian and conflict environments. It states that a strong
commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage in the National
Cultural Policy will result in improvements in emergency preparedness
and response.
