Geological heritage tourism in Vietnam
The sustainable exploitation of natural resources, mineral resources in particular, has always been a hot issue and priority for developing countries. Among the potential solutions to this issue is the harmonisation of exploitation and conservation of the national natural and
geological heritage to promote tourism.
According to UNESCO, geological heritage are geological sites that have outstanding scientific, educational, artistic and economic value. They include geomorphic landscapes, volcanoes, palaeographic remains, natural caves, abysses,
lakes, waterfalls and places where geological processes can be viewed. Such relics cannot regenerate so they must be preserved, managed and exploited in a suitable manner…

Destination Input Requested: New Self-Assessment Tool - Deadline for completing the survey: 22 March 2013
On behalf of the Sustainable Travel Leadership Network (STLN), I am writing to request the participation of Ministries of Tourism, Tourism Bureaus, and other destination managers in our Destination Sustainability Self-Assessment, a global initiative that aims to foster sustainable
tourism destinations.
International's STLN consists of leading companies from every sector of the travel industry, including some of the most prominent airlines, cruise lines, travel aggregators, hotel companies, and tour operators in the world. Participants include companies
like Carnival Cruises, Travelocity, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, United Airlines, and Virgin Holidays.
As part of our efforts to promote sustainable tourism, we have designed an on-line survey to help destinations evaluate their progress toward sustainability. This assessment
includes 20 questions and takes less than 20 minutes to complete. To ensure your destination is represented, we ask that you complete the survey no later than March 22, 2013.

European Indicators For Sustainable Destinations
On February 22, Sustainable Travel International joined the University of Surrey and the Intasave Partnership to launch the European Tourism Indicator System at the Crowne Plaza, Le Palace, Brussels. The conference, attended by 205 delegates from more than 20 countries
marked the conclusion of a 13-month project for the European Commission to assess the feasibility of developing and using a system of sustainable tourism indicators across Europe.
The indicators, which were originally developed by the Commission’s Tourism Steering Group
in 2009, were assessed against other systems internationally, and a set of implementation tools was developed to enable destinations to monitor them…

Preparing for Nyepi in Prambanan
On that Monday morning, amid the flow of domestic and foreign tourists, dozens of Hindu youth were tying up bamboo poles that they would use to carry ogoh-ogoh (giant papier-mâché figures) during the Tawur sacrificial ritual at noon.
One of the ogoh-ogoh, red and giant
with fiery eyes, stood next to these youth, while another one, a yellow troll with pointed fangs and long nails, had become a favorite photo buddy for the tourists roaming the spacious yard of Prambanan temple.
Several meters away, the women were busy preparing all the
paraphernalia and offerings for the Tawur, an important rite to restore the balance of the universe. Balinese Hindus believe that human activities always disturb the balance.

World's Most Expensive Trip Visits Every UNESCO World Heritage Site
An aggressive new itinerary offered by London-based luxury agency Hurlingham Travel gives discerning travelers the chance to see every single UNESCO World Heritage Site on a single jaunt around the world. The trip, which would theoretically wind its way through 157
countries, would run voyagers roughly $1.5 million -- not that you can put a price on heritage or anything.
The trip is currently for sale on VeryFirstTo.com, a British luxury retailer not dissimilar to Gilt. The product has yet to be reviewed for the very simple reason that
no one has ever purchased it. But, who doesn't want to see Angkor Wat, the Pyramids, Machu Picchu and the other well-known sites like the historic center of Berat and Gjirokastra, Jesuit Block and Estancias of Córdoba, the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, the Gobustan Rock
Art Cultural Landscape, Flemish Béguinages, Wood Buffalo National Park, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, Sulaiman-Too Sacred Mountain, the Bikini Atoll Nuclear Test Site, and the D.F…

Driving Norway’s Golden Route
In a country crammed with breathtaking fjords, sky scraping mountains and sensuous seascapes, giving one road the nickname the “Golden Route” is fairly significant.
But the Geiranger-Trollstigen Route offers 106km of raw Norwegian nature, with an awe-inspiring
collection of hairpin bends, glaciated valleys and emerald green fjords running north to south. It is also one of 18 National Tourist Routes that aim to draw visitors to all corners of Norway, by pairing beautiful drives with world-class architectural viewing points that effortlessly blend
nature with modernity. Six of the routes are completed and the remaining 12 routes will be finished by 2020…
